Marketing Automation: Three Things We Hate About You (Which We Made Better)

Marketing automation should make life easier - more time-efficient, more cost-effective, and require fewer people to run, especially for small businesses with limited resource. Plenty of "big boy" platforms can achieve genuinely impressive results, but only with a highly trained team behind them - a luxury most SMEs and start-ups simply don't have.

Key findings

  • Reporting shouldn't require a project of its own - it should just work, out of the box.
  • Price should be one flat, predictable monthly cost - not a six-figure platform that ends up used as a glorified email sender.
  • Usability shouldn't require a dedicated specialist team to operate day to day.

1. Reporting

There's little point building beautifully automated campaigns if you can't easily communicate the basics - who's opened what, who's filled in a form, who's ready for a follow-up call - to your board or sales team. Reporting should be built in and instantly usable, not something requiring its own dedicated build project.

2. Price

Many platforms are priced for enterprise budgets, leaving smaller teams using a five- or six-figure investment as little more than a glorified email sender. A single flat monthly cost, with no fixed long-term contract, removes that mismatch entirely.

3. Usability

No automation specialists or computer science degree should be required. A platform genuinely built by marketers, for marketers, should let a small team create great-looking emails and high-performing landing pages without needing to "tame the beast" first - giving smaller businesses access to the same segmentation, journey planning, and lead scoring capability that's traditionally been reserved for businesses with much bigger teams and budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common marketing automation frustrations for SMEs?

Complex, time-consuming reporting; high price points geared toward enterprise budgets; and platforms that require specialist technical skill to actually use day to day.

How can a smaller business get enterprise-level marketing automation value?

By choosing a second-generation platform built specifically for the SME market - with built-in reporting, a single flat monthly cost, and a no-code interface designed for marketers rather than engineers.
